Why You Feel Awkward on Camera (And How to Fix It for Good)

May 18, 2026

Hello, loves!

I'm a proud boy Mom, world traveler, margarita lover, and brand coach in San Diego who’s empowered over 300 entrepreneurs step into the spotlight, create a brand they’re obsessed with, and flourish in their purpose!

Meet meg

Feeling Awkward on Camera Is More Common Than You Think

If you’ve ever said, “I’m not photogenic,” “I feel awkward on camera,” or “I never love photos of myself,” you are not alone.

In fact, most of my clients say this before their brand photoshoot.

And here’s the truth I want you to hear clearly. Feeling awkward on camera is not a personality flaw. It is not a confidence issue. And it definitely does not mean you are bad at being photographed.

Usually, that awkwardness comes from past experiences where you did not feel supported, guided, or seen.

Maybe you were told to “just be natural.”
Maybe you were left wondering what to do with your hands.
Maybe the photos didn’t feel like you or align with your brand at all.

This blog is here to shift that story. Because when you understand why you feel awkward on camera, you can finally fix it. And the transformation that happens after that is powerful.

Why Feeling Awkward on Camera Often Comes from Past Photoshoot Experiences

One of the first things I ask clients is whether they’ve done a brand photoshoot before and how they felt about it.

So often, they share that they didn’t love their photos because the images didn’t feel like them. The photos didn’t authentically represent who they are, their brand personality, or the best version of themselves.

In most cases, this comes down to a lack of guidance. Clients weren’t given enough posing direction, didn’t know what to do with their body, or felt unsure throughout the shoot. When you don’t feel supported, it’s easy to look stiff or disconnected, and that directly affects how you feel about the final images.

Over time, that experience can turn into the belief that you’re “awkward on camera.” But the truth is, awkwardness is situational, not permanent. Confidence on camera is a skill anyone can learn. It’s what I teach my clients when they step in front of my lens.

When you prepare and follow the right guidance, everything changes. That’s why I created my free Confidence on Camera download so you can walk into your next brand photoshoot feeling grounded, confident, and ready to be seen by your ideal clients.

You’re Not Bad on Camera; You Were Under-Directed

One of the biggest misconceptions about brand photography is that clients are supposed to magically know how to pose.

That is not your job.

It is your photographer’s job to guide you through every detail, from where to stand to how to move your hands to exactly where to look.

When clients don’t receive that level of direction, they internalize the discomfort. They assume something is wrong with them.

But once you experience a shoot where every pose is guided from start to finish, everything shifts.

You relax.
You soften.
You trust the process.

Confidence doesn’t come from trying harder. It comes from feeling supported. This is also why confidence on camera is deeply connected to confidence in leadership and visibility, something I explore more in Increasing Client Confidence Starts With Increasing Your Own.

Why Preparation Is the Real Secret to Brand Photoshoot Confidence

True on-camera confidence starts long before the photoshoot day.

That’s why every client experience with me begins with a brand questionnaire and a strategy call weeks in advance.

We clarify your brand stories and select locations that reflect your unique identity. Each brand story comes with a thoughtfully crafted shot list, a curated prop collection, and intentional wardrobe inspiration.

This preparation happens four to six weeks before your shoot so you have time to do it well, not rushed.

When clients arrive fully prepared and see that every detail has been carefully planned, their confidence instantly grows. Most tell me they’ve never put this much intention into a photoshoot before.

And that intention shows in every image.

This is exactly why brand photography is more than just photos. It is an activation. You can explore this deeper in Brand Photos as an Activation: How a Brand Photographer Helps You Step Into Your Next-Level Identity.

How Feeling Good in Your Body Changes Everything on Camera

There is something powerful that happens when you love how you look before the camera even turns on.

Professional hair and makeup instantly elevate your confidence. Polished and confident, you’re completely taken care of and ready to shine.

On shoot day, my clients show up already glowing, already excited, and already grounded in the version of themselves they are stepping into.

That confidence becomes the foundation for everything we create together.

Because when you feel good in your body, the camera simply captures what’s already there.

Why Music, Movement, and Energy Matter During a Photoshoot

A brand photoshoot should never feel stiff or silent.

We set the vibe with your favorite music, get you moving, and maintain a fun, uplifting energy throughout.

Clients are always welcome to bring a friend for extra support if that feels good to them.

These details matter more than people realize. They help you drop out of your head and into your body.

And that’s where the magic happens.

The Power of Guided Posing and Seeing the Results in Real Time

Throughout every shoot, I guide every single pose. I tell you where to look, how to place your hands, and how to angle your body so you feel confident in every frame.

I even tell you what to think if I notice your energy and mind are somewhere else.

Instead of looking at a big, scary camera lens, you can envision one of your favorite people who brings you true joy when you look at the camera. Try this hack, because it instantly shifts your energy!

Seeing yourself reflected back through a supportive, intentional lens is often the moment everything clicks. Clients finally realize they were never the problem.

The Confidence Checklist That Makes a Huge Difference

Confidence isn’t just emotional. It’s practical too.

Before every shoot, I send clients a prep checklist so nothing feels forgotten or rushed.

This includes reminders like getting rest, doing nails, and setting an email autoresponder so you can be fully present on shoot day.

It also includes affirmations like:

  • I am confident and ready to be seen.
  • I am magnetic and enough just as I am.
  • Today is going to be fun, easy, and expansive.

If you want support with this now, you can download my free Confidence on Camera guide and start feeling more prepared right away.

The Belief I Invite You to Release About Being Photographed

The belief I want every woman to release is this. “I don’t look good in photos.”

That belief is not truth. It’s conditioning from misaligned experiences.

With the right preparation, guidance, lighting, and posing, your photos can absolutely reflect your natural beauty and energy.

This aligns with research shared by Harvard Business Review on confidence and presence, as well as insights from Forbes on authenticity and personal branding. Studies from Psychology Today also show how self-perception directly influences how others perceive us visually and professionally.

Being Good on Camera Is About Alignment, Not Perfection

Being good on camera doesn’t mean being stiff, overly polished, or pretending to be someone else.

It means feeling embodied. It means your photos actually feel like you. It means your brand story is clear, intentional, and aligned.

When that happens, confidence becomes inevitable.
